Cuyahoga Falls woman sentenced to prison for stealing from developmentally disabled man, using proceeds to buy a car

A 46-year-old Cuyahoga Falls woman was sentenced to prison Tuesday for stealing from a developmentally disabled man and using part of the money to buy a car.

Brenda Miller pleaded guilty March 8 in Summit County Common Pleas Court to theft from a person in a protected class, a third-degree felony. Judge Todd McKenney sentenced Miller Tuesday to 18 months in prison. She faced up to 36 months.

McKenney also ordered Miller to pay $45,000 in restitution and to turn over the car and trailer she bought with the money she stole, said James Pollack, a spokesman for the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.

Summit County Sheriff’s detectives say Miller convinced a 55-year-old Akron man to make two deposits into her personal bank account. Detectives began an investigation last October after learning that the man wasn’t receiving the items necessary for his daily care. They arrested Miller in December.
