Head to MLK Day activities
Take advantage of the many museums and cultural institutions that are offering free admission and special activities for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Here are just a few:
• The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is offering programming all day, including two showings of the film Selma, activities, talks and music (of course). www.rockhall.com.
• The Akron Zoo will have activities and crafts with the Akron branch of the NAACP. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free, but parking is still $3. www.akronzoo.org or call 330-375-2550.
• The Akron Art Museum offers hands-on art activities, games, storytelling and live music from 1 to 4 p.m. www.akronartmuseum.org.
• The Akron Area YMCA is offering free “Move for MLK” wellness activities at local branches from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. www.akronymca.org/Martin_Luther_King.
• Or take the suggestion of King’s widow, Coretta Scott King, and make it a day of service “to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutoring those who can’t read, mentoring at-risk youngsters, consoling the broken-hearted and a thousand other projects for building the beloved community of his dream.” (www.thekingcenter.org/meaning-king-holiday)
Find out pets’ secrets
On the lighter side, the Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N., Canton, will be showing The Secret Life of Pets at 1 p.m. Admission is just $1. 330-454-8172.
Watch ‘Sherlock’ finale
Sherlock fans can gather in theaters to watch the season four finale, The Final Problem, at 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. Cinemas include Tinseltown USA in Jackson Township and Valley View 24. www.fathomevents.com.
