AKRON: A 17-year-old boy was shot to death Wednesday in a confrontation that led to a lockdown at a nearby school, Akron police spokesman Lt. Rick Edwards said Wednesday.
At 3:41 p.m., police received a report of gunshots fired at West Thornton Street and Laurel Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the youth, a black male, on the ground with multiple gunshots.
Another victim, a 19-year-old male, was shot in the leg. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General with nonlife-threatening injuries, Edwards said.
The 17-year-old’s autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.
Police said there were no suspects in custody, and the victims’ identities were not immediately released. Akron detectives remained at the scene of the shooting Wednesday evening.
The reports of gunfire in the neighborhood led Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts to enact its Safe School Watch procedure, preventing anyone from entering or leaving the building.
Mark Williamson, director of marketing communications for Akron Public Schools, said around 35 students were in the building when the watch was implemented shortly before 4 p.m.
The watch was lifted around 4:30 p.m. after police determined the area was safe.
