A Medina County legislator will become the most powerful Ohio senator when the General Assembly convenes in January.

Sen. Larry Obhof (R-Montville Township) was unanimously elected Tuesday by the Republican majority to serve as president of the Ohio Senate for the incoming 132nd General Assembly.

The announcement puts Medina County back in a position of power in Columbus. Previously, state Rep. William G. Batchelder held various top posts over his three decades in the Ohio House, including speaker from 2010 to 2014.

Obhof is the first senator from Medina to serve as president since Samuel Humphreyville in the 1860s.

Obhof will replace Sen. President Keith Faber (R-Celina), who is moving back to the House after term limits.
