Jobless rates increase in Summit County, elsewhere in region

Summit County’s jobless rate rose in September from August and was higher than a year ago, figures released Tuesday show.

Unemployment rates rose in many other parts of Northeast Ohio as well.

The Summit County unemployment rate last month was 4.9 percent, up from 4.7 percent in August and 4.3 percent a year ago.

Akron’s unemployment rate rose as well, going to 5.6 percent in September, up from 5.4 percent in August and 4.9 percent in September 2015.

The jobless rate in Cuyahoga Falls didn’t fare any better. The rate last month rose to 4.5 percent from 4.2 percent in August and was up from 4 percent a year ago.

Unemployment rates rose in 80 of Ohio’s 88 counties, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Rates fell in six counties and were unchanged in two. Rates ranged from a low of 3.2 percent in Mercer County to a high of 9.2 percent in Monroe County.

Rates were not adjusted to take into account seasonal changes.

The comparable unemployment rate for Ohio in September was 4.8 percent; the seasonally adjusted number was also 4.8 percent. The U.S. unemployment rate last month was 4.8 percent, with the seasonally adjusted number at 5 percent.

Unemployment rates elsewhere in Northeast Ohio for September, August and a year ago:

• Cuyahoga County: 5.1, 5.5, 4.4

• Cleveland: 6.4, 7, 5.5

• Medina County: 4.1, 4.3, 3.4

• Portage County: 4.9, 4.5, 4.2

• Stark County: 5.3, 4.9, 4.9

• Canton: 6.3, 5.9, 5.5

• Wayne County: 4, 3.6, 3.6
