Small plane crashes in Wayne County field; pilot, passenger suffer minor injuries

A small airplane crashed into a soybean field Wednesday near Fulton Road in Creston, the Wooster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported. The pilot and his passenger escaped the upside-down aircraft with minor injuries and notified authorities.

The pilot, Charles Marcum, 74, of Lorain was operating a Cherokee 140 single-engine plane. Marcum said the engine stopped abruptly and he attempted to land in an open field. After landing, the plane flipped over and came to rest on its topside.

Marcum and passenger Vance Mansfield, 29, of Lorain were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration was notified and went to the scene to investigate. Also ressponding along with state troopers were officers from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and Canaan Township Fire and EMS.
