Donald Trump leads Hillary Clinton in Ohio by 5 percentage points, according to the first poll conducted since Clinton fell ill and also described half of Trump’s followers as “deplorables.”
Ohio has been close in every recent poll, but the Bloomberg Politics survey, completed Monday, is the first to put Trump ahead. The margin of error is 3.5 percent.
Quinnipiac, a week earlier, put Trump ahead by 1 percentage point, and the margin of error again was 3.5 percent.
The new Bloomberg poll, released Wednesday, has Trump ahead 44 percent to 39 percent among Ohio likely voters.
Third-party candidates also make a strong showing, with Libertarian Gary Johnson receiving 10 percent and Green Party nominee Jill Stein receiving 3 percent.
The poll was conducted Friday through Monday. Clinton made her statement Friday that half of Trump’s supporters are from a “basket of deplorables” that includes racists, sexists, homophobes, xenophobes, Islamaphobes.
On Sunday at the 9-11 observance in New York, she became lightheaded and later revealed that she had pneumonia.
