Communities throughout the Akron-Cleveland region got a wintry surprise Sunday with snow being spotted in the air.
The National Weather Service reported only a trace of snow at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Cleveland.com reports that some communities east of Cleveland saw snow accumulating on the ground and roofs of buildings.
People running in Sunday’s Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon and the event’s shorter races had to contend with high winds, temperatures in the 30s and large flakes of wet snow falling throughout the morning.
At the Akron-Canton Airport, the weather service reported a very slight bit of precipitation Sunday afternoon. It was not immediately clear whether the weather service was considering this snow. More information was to be available Sunday evening.
The last time the weather service reported a trace of snow during May at the Akron-Canton Airport was in 2005,
The last year there was a measurable amount of snow in May for the area was in 1989, when 1.5 inches were recorded at the airport, according to the weather service. The only other years when there were measurable amounts were in 1966, when 3.2 inches fell, and 1963, when 0.4 inches fell.
Meanwhile, a frost advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday for Summit, Stark, Portage, Medina and Wayne counties, along with other northern Ohio counties, according to the National Weather Service.
