AKRON: A 17-year-old Ellet High School student faces two felony gun charges, after bringing a loaded handgun to school on Wednesday.
According to Akron Police Capt. Daniel Zampelli, Akron police resources officers were tipped off by a staff member that the boy might have a gun. When officers approached him, he admitted that he had a weapon and handed over the 40–caliber semi-automatic handgun without incident.
The student was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and having a firearm on school property. He was taken to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center, where he awaits arraignment.
School officials reported that the school was locked down from 10:35 to 11:20 a.m. and that the weapon was recovered within five minutes of the lockdown, during which class instruction was not interrupted.
